I'm pleased Win10 is working out for you.

07/06/16(Tue)12:44

One more thing....the tool bar at the top of the page doesn't have a little house so's I can return to home, anymore. Where did it go?

07/06/16(Tue)12:26

It doesn't lock up as much as 7 was starting to. I don't know what caused that. By locking up, I refer to....when reading an item and scrolling down the page...it locks up...nothing. I have to go to task manager, delete the page, go back to home screen, click on 'edge' and it reopens back on the page I was reading. Some days there are no problems and some, maybe because of heavy usage, it locks up more often. Win. 7 was getting ridiculous. 10 seems better in that respect.

My landlord, that lives in the back of the house, is connected to my router. No wireless, we are hardwired into the same router. There are days she's on the internet constantly. I haven't paid too much attention when she's on line and when she's not.

Otherwise, 10 is ok. It's faster but 7 was easier to use overall.

07/06/16(Tue)08:15

so goodgrief, are you still happy with W10?

27/05/16(Fri)23:24

Well thanks. I am learning to navigate and have found 10 is faster in some news viewing and slower than 7 in others. I have that 'Cortana' thingy. Haven't needed him/her as of yet.

My use of a computer is more simple than most so I don't have to learn much.

I have noticed how quickly it loads when I fire it up in the morning. That's nice.

27/05/16(Fri)18:08

Windows 10 is a good operating system, but as Grim says it's not easy to get full control of it.
However the old phrase 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' never rings truer than with computers :D
GG, We're here if you need and help getting to grips with window 10.

26/05/16(Thu)09:45

J.C. mentioned the camera/picture-card problem. I hope that doesn't happen to me like your father. My computer is 6 yrs. old (approximately). Many times I've used the camera card to bring pictures to this site and also email them to friends. We'll see.
Hopefully, the other negatives you mentioned won't interfere with my simple, every day use.

25/05/16(Wed)21:48

Okay, maybe he doesn't hate it.. maybe he loves it

First I need to say that I use Windows 10 on my htpc and at work and have no issues whatsoever. It will run all games, and I've found no issues with movies, series, and generally browsing the web. Also you can turn a lot of automated functions off but it does require a bit of digging and/or googling.

Now a bit of negative. The user is not really in control (even if you're an admin), the Operating System; Skynet..erm Microsoft is. A lot of stuff is automated and can't be turned off easily. I, for one, uses a local account (admin) to bypass a few features but even than the updating goes automatically. I've had updates for stuff I no longer use :/

Also a small number of people found issues with importing photos, mostly from expensive cameras. My dad, 63 yo and Windows 10 user, has this issue, while my work computer (also Windows 10) does not have it. :/
It could be his ancient motherboard..(Asus P7P55D from 2009).

25/05/16(Wed)20:05

Thanks, I think. You might have to explain that to me.

That's why I call it a deathtrap, although more accurately it would be a boobytrap.

Bastards. Anyway, from my tests it's indeed not hard/solid state drive related, nor cpu related.

Mobo seems the most logical choice. Lol, MS and logic :D

27/04/16(Wed)10:43

>>32386 Microsoft won't say how it works but tests seem to show it's the mobo.
I suspect if you kept the same CPU and changed the mobo it may still be ok as each CPU has an individual ID that could be used to link it to an activation.

27/04/16(Wed)09:42

Yeah, but I couldn't find any accurate info on this by microsoft, only contradicting explanations on the forums.

26/04/16(Tue)17:38

My understanding is windows 10 activation is linked to the Mobo.
If you buy a retail copy of Windows 10 you can use the key on another computer/mobo.

26/04/16(Tue)09:40

Good news: Windows 10 didn't bitch about a reactivation when I swapped the i3-4160 to an i5-4670k processor. RAM (memory) wasn't an issue either but I already knew that.

23/04/16(Sat)14:24

20/04/16(Wed)08:57

I found this advice for hotmail for someone else who didn't have images showing up:

1. Sign in to your account and go to your inbox page.

2. Click on the gear icon next to your username and select Options
then More mail settings.

3. Under Reading email, click on Group by conversation and pre-load messages.

4. Under conversation threading, check if group messages by conversation. If it is selected, please choose the other option which is Show messages individually or the opposite.

5. Click on Save.

14/04/16(Thu)15:18

>>32326>>32328 Maybe they're just the thumbnails or really tiny pix?

14/04/16(Thu)12:37

>>32326 They are jpg format. I have forwarded them to you in your email. Maybe you can see the problem.

They are just pictures that were forwarded to him from a friend.

He has just passed them on, as he often does, to friends and family.

Hope this sheds some light on the matter.

14/04/16(Thu)01:45

>>32323 Highly unlikely to be a OS related problem. There are several reasons this might be happening, but first of all note that the message will appear as soon as it's downloaded but the images might take longer to download and therefore not appear, at least to start with.
It could also be that the picture files being sent are too big to send via email and are therefore not visible. File size limits on email vary but can be as little as a few megabytes.
If the pictures being sent use a special raw format that some cameras use then your computer may not be able to show them.
Your brother may be embedding the pictures in the email which not all email readers can cope with so he may like to try just sending them as attachments which you can then open like any other picture on your computer.
Does your email software show that there are any attached files? If so what is the file format, eg .jpg or .png?

13/04/16(Wed)13:19

I have a question for the Gurus:
My brother has Windows 10 now and is sending me pictures to my email. I get little icons but no pictures; I can't open them and after a few moments, the little icons disappear. He has received my reply, when I tell him I see nothing and the icons become pictures within my reply on his email.
Does this have something to do with our two different systems or I need to build a tinfoil hat before emailing?

08/04/16(Fri)00:40

>>32309 Thanks. My computer is fairly old so it's a sensible suggestion.
When I heard your mention about digital pictures from your camera, a red flag went up; don't be needing to have errors with that. You're a whiz at computers where I am not. The problem with that would drive me to insanity.

07/04/16(Thu)13:54

>>32299 I wouldn't worry about 7 being out of support. MS would still fix any major security problems for a few years to come, but there are unlikely to be any. Anti-virus will keep you safe from anything else. Just keep going with 7, if you are happy with it, until the computer dies and you get a new one with 10, or whatever else we have then.

>>32298 The problem is that lots of people have WU set to automatically install recommended updates.

31/03/16(Thu)12:44

>>32304 OK Thanks.

30/03/16(Wed)13:16

You could try Windows 10 while it's still free, just make up your mind within 30 days otherwise you can't turn back to 3.1 ;)

28/03/16(Mon)11:34

When I shut the computer off, when I go to bed at night, from time to time the screen will say:
"Please do not shut your machine off while installing 1 of 12 (example)". When I turn it back on in the morning, it installs where it left off the past night.

I'm guessing all these 'up-grades' will cease in July of this year when Windows 10 becomes official with Microsoft. This is probably the 'support' you've been discussing and will no longer be available, huh?

Microsoft will remind me on a daily basis these days about installing Windows 10 in one of three ways:
1.A blue long box at the top of the screen above my tool bar (Install Windows 10 now for free).
2.A huge blue box that fills the entire monitor screen (Install Windows 10 now for free)
3.A small blue box, bottom right of screen above the time and date.

I haven't had any messages sent to me by Microsoft that are sneaky in their wording; it's plain as day, thus far, they want me to up-grade.

I'm going to wait to the point my computer becomes unbearable to operate or just crashes because of age. At that point, I'll go to the store and buy another one that has Windows 10 already installed. I hate change!

But now, it's on and every day it will make incremental backups.

Ha, regedit ..such a delight to work with

15/12/15(Tue)09:33

Could you not have extracted the data even with it as a data drive? Usually such crap is stored in the hidden AppData folder somewhere.
I too have experienced windows 10 screwing up it's boot ability a not being able to fix it :/

I found a registry fix for my HTPC to cure the weather station disconnecting problem. All working well now :)

14/12/15(Mon)03:42

ugh, so last week my dads old hard drive started to act up: ticking noises, taking forever to boot and load..all signs of impending death.

I gave him an older ssd, installed Windows 10 again, and most of the needed programs. Then I realized I forgot to backup Office Outlook, but I thought I could check it later as I could with all the previous versions of windows... Well, no. The old Windows 10 drive wasn't recognized as a boot drive anymore (I removed the ssd, otherwise a boot load issue might occur). The old Windows was now only seen as a data drive, which means you can't actually do anything with it, except format and throw away.

So, a fair warning to all; make periodic backups! Especially if you use Windows 10 and Office Outlook!

07/12/15(Mon)23:09

Well, I used to have an Asrock M-ITX onboard mobo as my HTPC but then I decided I also wanted to game on the couch. Now I could've just connected the tv to my main gaming rig but where's the fun in that? ;)

So I build a Steam&HT-PC with a dual core i3-4160 and a GTX960, it runs most racing games at a steady 60fps, and plays most movies without hiccups. This is the only rig (I have 3) that uses W10..sort of flawlessly. http://imgur.com/a/HnqzX

For downloading games, series, & movies I have a Synology DS215j (NAS) with 2x 2TB WD's in raid 1 (it also contains personal files). Mine is also on 24/7 with hibernation of course.

07/12/15(Mon)16:21

>>31834 Well as I'll only use it probably once a year that'll be fine XD

The HTPC/Server is on 24/7. It's a pretty old dual core Atom with Nvidia ION graphics which means it can handle HD without breaking a sweat. However it doesn't have H265 support which is becoming an issue as many people are starting to use it for HD movies. It currently runs Win10 but I'm having problems with my weather station disconnecting, Microsoft changed the USB HID drivers in the latest version of 10!?!, so it looks like I'll have to go back to 7. Not a big problem just a pain in the arse.
I'm thinking of updating the hardware to a ASRock N3150 which would give me a bit more power and H265, only about £75 so not a bad update.
What HTPC software do you use? I used to run Mediaportal but changed this year to Kodi, and love it! I still use the Mediaportal Server to handle the twin satellite recievers and live tv stuff. kodi doesn't have it's own tv server.

07/12/15(Mon)12:38

>>31833 looks like the Logitech K400, that thing broke within a year :(

Lime kitty can't be dropped :(

apparently it's only my W10, my dad's W10 can still use drag 'n' drop.

Dude, JC, my man, Can you check if you can drag and drop files in your version of w10? My work computer seems to lost that ability.

>>31094 Very useful info, thanks Grim.

02/08/15(Sun)12:44

>>31094I looked over your link suggestion and it worries me also. Even Microsoft admits a customer might be in the middle of important stuff, have a glitch in its production and have it whisked off to Microsoft for inspection. Damn! The word Microsoft used was 'spying' and it's exactly that. Maybe they intend no malice in helping to fix problems but I'm not liking the connection they know where and what I'm browsing especially my bank account numbers.

Registry setting to turn off?

>>31089 yeah, even if you're using a local account it still collect data.

This setting in the privacy tab worries me most. Found this site, but haven't tried it yet.

Been running it a while on my laptop and no upgraded my server. It all went pretty well and seems to work fine. Had some issues along the way with drivers, but fingers crossed it's all sorted now. The only downside of 10 is all the settings you have to change to stop MS accessing all your data.

Well boot time on my personal computer are back to normal again. Turns out it was a driver issue (duh). Instead of 42 sec it's now back to ~10 sec.

30/07/15(Thu)16:32

>>31067 weirdly enough my work computer has no issues at all. Boot time is just as quick as with windows 8.1 and youtube works fine with Google Chrome.

>>31070 If an OS crashes it doesn't mean it's going bad, it could just be a conflict or program error.
I do recommend to update(=free) within the year, rather than buying a new OS(=$100).
Or wait at least 8 months, then there will be enough patches to smooth things out anyway.

30/07/15(Thu)11:55

Thanks for the info. Think I'll just stick with Windows 7 for now. When this computer crashes, I'll get another with 10 already installed.

edit: "For an entire year (up to July 29th 2016) an upgrade to Windows 10 is free for everyone if you are running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1."

>>31065 It's still free for now.. but maybe next month it won't be anymore.

Windows 10 is a lot like 7, basically the way 8.1 should have been.

There are a few hiccups though: boot time is rather slow compared to windows 8.1 (which was really fast), and I had a sound issue with youtube videos on Chrome (I use Firefox now, and have no more problems).

29/07/15(Wed)22:01

First I read it's free. Then I read the home edition is $100.00 and the business edition is $200.00. Did anyone fork over one single dime?

29/07/15(Wed)19:09

I have Windows 8.1 at home (and enjoy it) and Windows XP at the office (and love it). I hear 7 is better than 8, and 10 is akin to 7 in some ways, so I'll probably upgrade.

button mash victory!

Installation (upgrade from 8.1) was easy, and all programs work without any issues.
Activation however wasn't however, as too many wankers were trying to do the same thing.
