>>27339 That's because it really is a gif and has simply been named incorrectly. Most graphics software will read the header of the file and act accordingly regardless of what the file name suggests. No such thing as an animated jpg, the file format simply doesn't support that. :)

>>27300 I agree. There is also just too much friction in it all. I have seen a motorbike with a design like this but the rim was fixed and the tyre rotated around it. If that could be achieved with magnets instead of bearings it could be quite efficient, but probably not remotely practical :)

10/04/14(Thu)23:28

>>27299 Different, huh. I can see some very big flaws to this wheel design though.
1. A large pothole might dent the rim.
2. On a wet road that drive wheel might tend to slip on the rim.

This is what I am talking about. Large seat, handle bars that come way back and big balloon tires for a soft ride. (poor pic but you get the idea)

It's all a case of horses for courses :D

similar grandpa cycle

My first 'grown-up' bike belonged to my grandpa, from the 2nd WW.

Having had at least 2 bicycles with rear suspension I can tell you it's utter useless on the road, but very handy off-road. Most full suspension bicycles are off-road cycles anyway. However I do see more city bikes with full suspension (and batteries), mostly used by elder folk.

Those cycles you describe are horrendous for hilly countryside, I've seen them cruisin' in Amsterdam..prolly stoned too ;)

Although I can't see a manufacturer marketing a bike that's not 'road worthy', they both look uncomfortable. Too many bikes on the road today are uncomfortable as hell. The seats tear up the crotch, the tires are so thin and stiff the rider gets the full effect of every bump and the handle bars are so low by the time one leaves his ride he's bent to that position for the rest of the day. Bicycles built in the 50's had large seats, long handle bars and large tires that offered good cushion for a smooth ride. Speed wasn't a consideration because the ride was for pleasure. A nice afternoon bike ride isn't the case any more. What the hell happened?

The 'vouwfiets'

I used to have foam filled (still had air pockets) tires but it wasn't comfortable at all and pretty heavy too.

>>27285 I wonder how it does with vibrations (dents and (put)holes). My guess the wheels can't hold it very long.

>>27284 old concept new implementation

08/04/14(Tue)00:15

>>27282 No. Regeneration is possible on bikes but generally isn't considered to worthwhile due to the amounts of power generated being very small and wear to the battery.

>>27284 Nice idea, but I'm not sure it'll make for a very ride-able bike.

>>27285 I'd love to have a go on a bike like this to see how practical it really is. The style is amazing though.

Had my first puncture on the new bike today, only a slow one so not a problem, which is likely to be a recurring issue on the country lanes here. I'm thinking of getting some puncture resistant tyres. Slime filled tubes are an option but I've read so many bad reviews. Tube guards are another option but again there are many stories of how while they may stop thorns puncturing the tube the hard plastic of the tube guard rubs the tube and causes punctures instead!?!

Does the battery recharge when you put the peddle to the metal? ;)

05/04/14(Sat)14:53

5 hours for a full charge.

05/04/14(Sat)12:22

Very nice, J.C. How long does it take to recharge the battery?

04/04/14(Fri)21:26

Yes to the helmet, no to the flashy yellow jacket :D

04/04/14(Fri)15:34

wow, it almost is a motorcycle, you even have blinkers and a mirror! You have a helmet too?
And a flashy yellow jacket?

Lol! Couldn't you just bought a lock? ;)

03/04/14(Thu)21:39

Going well. I've been slowly getting used to it, tweaking things here and there. Battery lasts well, 25+ miles, and the motor has plenty of power to deal with strong head winds and hills.
I've added a lighting system and alarm to it, home made as usual :D
The alarm features a 3 axis gyroscope and accelerometer to detect movement and sounds an alarm an flashes the lights. At the same time a gps tracker activates and phones me up to tell me the bike is being interfered with and where the bike is :) Only a little over the top I'm sure you'll agree.
I'll post some pictures as some point.
