My giant puffballs

13/09/10(Mon)14:40

I have five puffballs this year - never had any before. A few days earlier they were smooth and snow white. The larger one is 37 inches in circumference (94 cm). It's co-joined twin is 27.5 inches (69.9 cm).

They vanish when you hit them with the mower!

goodgrief - OOuch!

JC - I spotted a sixth one nearby, a bit farther in the woods. As I said, I've never had any before - I wonder why so many this year. Each puffball must produce billions of spores, but you seldom see them. I wonder if these will spawn more next year.

When I was 8 years old, I ran into a fire hydrant while pulling a kite. This reminds me of that.

I too have giant puffballs :D
But they currently look very eaten.
2 this year, and 1 each the previous 2 years

They are edible when white - these are a few days too old. Slice them up, Fry them in butter - or dip in batter & fry. I should have tried it.

Soon they will disintegrate into billions of spores.

There's a TV cook called Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall over here who cooked a giant puffball on his show a couple of years ago. He hollowed it out, stuffed other things in it then baked it. I don't know if they're all safe though.

I've had some very large, wierd mushroomy things in the East lot growing! I should have taken photos before I mowed over them!
