So having been using this thing for a week+ I can say it's a pretty nice computer. The keyboard isn't as nice as the old Alienware and is taking a bit of getting used to. The main thing about the keyboard that annoys me is that it doesn't have traditional dedicated home and end keys, but it has 3 options to have either home and end on the numpad as a single key press or you can use other keys for home and end with a modifier key in combination. I haven't settled on what works best for me yet.

Some that confused me a little is why have laptop screens gone back to 16:10 aspect ration again? This 4K screen is 3840x2400. I don't mind having a little extra height to the display I'm just confused why it's changed again. I've had laptops that have gone from 4:3 to 16:10 to 16:9 and back to 16:10!?!

The default fan curves are weird, on linux at least. In 'quiet' mode the fans just never do anything it seemed and in 'balanced' and 'performance' the fans do nothing for 20 seconds then the computers hit a slight higher temperature and suddenly you have 3 fans blowing at full force. 20 seconds later it cools enough and the fans go off only for the process to repeat endlessly! I have created better fan curves that gently ramp up the fan power rather than it being all or nothing.

Other than the problem with the screen brightness not working correctly if I use the intel gpu and not being able to make use of the dolby atmos sound capability I've had no other issues with this hardware on Linux. To be clear the the brightness works perfectly in nVidia only mode and the sound is great in standard stereo mode.

Overall I'm really pleased with this laptop and I think it'll give me many years of happy use.

And for some reason it has this funky led display thing, called the AniMe Vision display, on the top of the lid, where you can't see it! Thankfully it can be turned off XD

It has arrived and it's working pretty well with Linux Mint :)

I initially had a major problem with linux not working well with the laptop display and the backlight being insanely bright even on minimum. It took a couple of days to find a solution. If I couldn't find a solution I was going to send the bloody thing back XD

I'm now slowly getting to grips with all the usual installing of software and setting things up how I like them.

Overall the quality seems just as good if not better than the Alienware. The keyboard isn't quite as good as the old Alienware, but new Alienwares have even worse keyboards!?! I'll get used to it soon enough. The co-pilot key is highly offensive to me but will be re-purposed as a macro key.

Steam is installed and everything so far is working well.

There is a nice little open source project that gives all the functionality of the windows only genuine asus control centre software in linux which is very handy for setting up the led lighting and power features.

I still have plenty of things to figure out but nothing that should be a major problem, just the usual linux problem solving XD

As for pretty much anything nowadays, cheap? what's that? But recently one of my solidgm drives borked and those weren't cheap. Luckily the 2TB seems fine so that's my current one.

I hope it arrives soon, unpacking a new toy is always a part of the fun.

So after much fucking about and reading shit I decided to get a 4Tb Samsung 990 Pro for the data drive. There were some slightly cheaper options but the Samsung just has the best specs so might as well just go for that. It's a Gen 4 pcie ssd so doesn't have the extra speed of a Gen 5 but there is no way I'm spending £800+ for that. Paying £540 for 4Tb is enough for me!!! XD

I always feel that cheaping out on storage is a bad idea.

I ordered a little nvme ssd enclosure too so I can get data off my old drives easily. It claims to be capable of 20Gbps so shouldn't be too bad.

I went with the 5080 model with a single 1TB ssd.

I considered several makes, MSI was a close second, but I've always been happy with Asus products so decided this was the one. When it gets here is anyone's guess. I bought direct from Asus UK and they say it's in stock but give no indication at all how long delivery takes or if it's really from the UK or China etc. Hopefully in a few days!

Now I need to decide what 4TB ssd to get as my second drive. I doubt I'll get a Gen 5 pcie because the premium over the Gen 4 is insane. None of the gaming laptops you can buy currently come with a Gen 5 ssd as standard due to the cost.

It's £4.1K here, but then I'll need to spend another £400+ on a 4TB SSD for the second M.2 bay. Sadly it doesn't have a 2.5" hdd bay for my current 4TB SSD :/

I've read that the 5090 is only max 10% faster and I don't care about having 24Gb Vram instead of 12Gb. Not worth the extra £1.5K.

I've looked it up and it seems like it's well supported in Linux so it should be pretty simply to get up and running in Linux Mint again. There are some cheaper options but I feel Asus should have a bit of quality to it. After all I'm writing this on my 2012 Asus N55SL laptop with Nvidia GT635! XD
I'll take a good look this evening or tomorrow and get something ordered.
