RIP Alienware 17R4 (2017-2026)
17/09/26(Thu)08:44

It is with great sadness that I must report my Alienware laptop sadly played it's last game last night. One minute I was catching Pals and then suddenly nothing :/

It's pretty clear that the voltage regulator on the motherboard is fucked beyond repair.

I was hoping to replace it soon anyway, but had hoped it would get in to next year at least. I really can't complain about getting 9 and a half years of gaming out of it though.

Time to find a new laptop, maybe an ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 with a 5080. The 5090 version isn't worth the extra £1.5K in my opinion. We'll see...

RIP little computer buddy, you will be missed.

It's £4.1K here, but then I'll need to spend another £400+ on a 4TB SSD for the second M.2 bay. Sadly it doesn't have a 2.5" hdd bay for my current 4TB SSD :/

I've read that the 5090 is only max 10% faster and I don't care about having 24Gb Vram instead of 12Gb. Not worth the extra £1.5K.

I've looked it up and it seems like it's well supported in Linux so it should be pretty simply to get up and running in Linux Mint again. There are some cheaper options but I feel Asus should have a bit of quality to it. After all I'm writing this on my 2012 Asus N55SL laptop with Nvidia GT635! XD
I'll take a good look this evening or tomorrow and get something ordered.
