I just had a look on rottentomatoes.com to see what the scores are. No surprise that the critics rate STD at 86% and The Orville at 19%, but audiences rate STD at 60% and The Orville at 91%. The critics are usually wrong on things like this.

Before Kirk?! But they have modern stations ..no knobs (well..) and switches!

As for The Orville I thought it would be lame, cause Seth, but it's surprisingly awesome. Much more in the style of the original Star Trek, with the obvious plywood settings and sometimes cheesy humor. I like it.

STD takes itself waaaay too seriously, The Orville is much more casual, although that sex change episode was heavy, overall The Orville is easier to watch.

STD is 50 years before Kirk but it's not a good fit. They really should have gone for after TNG.

As for Orville? haven't seen it yet but seen some snaps and I'm intrigued.

I find the new star trek a bit odd, it isn't what I call star trek. I don't dislike it but I preferred the style of TNG to this new one.
I wasn't too impressed with the first episode of the orville but it's got much better with the more recent episodes. Episode 3 was really good, could easily have been a TNG story.
I'll keep watching them both and see what happens...
