>>30064 yes. it's a really old tradition, pre-Christianity. It has to do with the days before lent (Vaste = fasten). The food had to be eaten before it started to rot and decay. Also sex, lots and lots of sex :)

For Christians it's the time to get a bit crazy before Ash Wednesday. And the days before lent. I know the Christian church tried to ban it, failed and than 'incorporate' it with their religion. Like Microsoft. Probably more meaning too, I reckon.
