our government is in debt, same as any other country. And they just keep spending and spending, all while tax is going up :/

No offense to anyone, but I still prefer the sound of pistons over jets.

27/06/14(Fri)22:56

I'm sure your government can afford a few of those even though they're overpriced. Who would want to attack the Netherlands anyway?
Even though that Vulcan can only go about 600 top speed, if it flew over you'd know it.

27/06/14(Fri)13:01

>>28248 secret electronics? "press this button for invisibility" or "engage this lever for quantum leap" ;p I'm sure the communications section will be different, maybe the radar but that's about it.
The plane is sort-of-stealthy; it's radar signature is smaller than similar conventional aircraft. However radar technology is advancing too (go Thales!)
Just a little fact: F-35 Program cost US$1.0165 trillion (projected over 55 years)

Btw, the video shows a great example of American design and Dutch engineering.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Sp0tEE8OPY

Oh and the Vulcan can't break the sound barrier.

27/06/14(Fri)01:14

>>28248 No, the U.S. isn't giving up secrets!
Al-obama is!

26/06/14(Thu)23:31

>>28241 So what you're saying is that the U.S. is going to share secrets with other countries? Lockeed may be building these planes for other countries (which I didn't know) but you can best bet the secret electronics will be controlled by our government and not Lockheed.
>>28244 Sorry you missed the fly-over; you might have enjoyed a good sonic boom.

26/06/14(Thu)15:34

I just found out that the last remaining airworthy Vulcan bomber was due to do a flypast at Old Warden near where I live on Sunday, but it's been cancelled. Bummer.

26/06/14(Thu)15:22

The UK bought F4 Phantoms when our home grown TSR2 was cancelled. They got better radar than standard US models, more powerful and more efficient Rolls Royce engines, and were partly built here. Still the US demanded that none were passed on to private organisations when they were retired, so there are none preserved in UK museums.

26/06/14(Thu)12:39

Oh yeah, the UK, Canada, the Netherlands, and several others are participating in the build process.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_Martin_F-35_Lightning_II_procurement

If you think the US keeps new stuff you're wrong. Those private companies like to earn money, lots of money.

26/06/14(Thu)10:14

Yeah, the F-35. That's the one. Didn't know it was going to be sold to other countries though (top secret stuff on board and all that shit). I always thought the U.S. would sell all the older planes to NATO and keep the newer ones for themselves.

Lockheed-Martin is building the next gen fighter F-35 Lightning II, aka the Joint Strike Fighter. It comes in different flavors: an air force variant, a navy variant (with better shocks), and a VTOL (similar to the Harrier). It's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced and my government purchased too many. They should've gone for the Saab Gripen.
FFS, our CIS (Communications and Information Systems) units still operate with G3 servers :|

Maybe you're thinking of the Sukhoi Su-27 (why are Russian aircraft always so large?)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukhoi_Su-27

The UK sim rides was boring; no cockpit, just a sort-of covered classroom on hydraulics. Fun for kids, not for giants like me.

25/06/14(Wed)22:10

I saw that simulator building next to the runway but figured the line would have been too long.
I think I read about a new fighter being developed by Lockheed that will fly circles around the F-16. The Chinese will have to drop by and steal some more secrets.
>>28235 I'm probably thinking of another Mig the Ruskies had that was better than what the U.S. had.

25/06/14(Wed)14:26

btw, the Mig29 was Russia's answer to the F15.

Sukhoi PAK FA

I think the Chinese will be a bigger threat today, although the 'new' generation of Russian fighters looks promising too.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukhoi_PAK_FA

Yeah, our legs & feet were sore. There were a few JD gators around but they wouldn't stop for us grunting folks ;) And there was pretty much anything you would want/never use again. You could also 'fly' in a replica F-104 simulator (actual cockpit), although the game was FSX :(

And according to the news around 245.000 people visited in 2 days.

25/06/14(Wed)11:05

There was a time when that Mig could outfly anything the U.S. had which led to billions spent at Lockheed/Martin. It's still a damn good airplane kind of like the Phantom 2 that stayed in service for so long.
>>28232 That's a lot of walking. Any gift shops with little F16's on key chains?
Did over 100,000 people show up?

>>28229 yes, it is. Although the one flown there is from the Czech Air Force. The Mig-29 had it's first flight on October the 6th 1977, and was introduced in 1983.

Another pic, different view.

Must have been quite a long walk looking at so many aircraft; far as I can tell, many countries were represented.
Still had a problem with blank photos but I got the general idea. Thanks.

24/06/14(Tue)07:43

>>28214 Pretty much the same, only different aircraft.

I made a separate folder for the aerial footage; 92 UHQ pix http://imgur.com/a/mhM8r

The other folder has 92 pix of the static models: http://imgur.com/a/kPtDA

Let me know if they load (on your end).
If it should fail you can view these thumbnails.

And there were several aircraft and vehicles you could go inside; the CH-130 Hercules, the CH-47 Chinook, the NH-90, and several vehicles.

I only went into the Fennek >>28168

No, they didn't want those pesky kids all over the only Lanni still flying in Europe (the world?)
