DIY inline volume control

It's difficult to find a good (short cable, golden connectors) inline volume control, with a 6.3mm jack. So I wondered if I can do it myself (better). Has anybody ever tried such a thing, and what on earth should I watch out for?

An in-line volume control can be achieved by a simple a variable resistor set up as a voltage divider. Jack plugs and sockets are all easy to solder.
