I'm not so worried someone will break into my apartment (I live on the second floor), and my front door can withstand the pressure (feet) of a mad man.
Just in case I do have a 39" steel rod (ex-lamp holder) near my bed.
And as a personal defense 'weapon' I carry a short screwdriver for the time being. There's always something that needs screwing ;)

a bat is a great idea for "reaching" things. A golf club works too (light weight, firm grip). And for being a little more inconspicuous, I keep a hammer handy.
