28/10/13(Mon)16:30

The 'code red' storm (wind speed: +100kph) killed people in Germany, the UK, and in the Netherlands.

True, 5 points for the correct sea ;) and don't worry, I don't eat spam and spam with spam on the side ;)

It's the bacon with bacon juice that normally gets me

Thanks for the geography lesson. I don't look over that way too much. I knew the Baltic was over there somewhere. I did get the North Sea correct though.
For that other problem I can send you a bottle of 'GasX'. You're not eating that sticky pudding J.C.'s sending you, are you? Why do you think he's replacing his septic tank?

Baltic sea, lol! And oh yeah, I'm very windy at times, hahaha!

We, the Dutch, from the tiny country the Netherlands face the North Sea, mister goodgrief.

Please don't confuse us with the Danish, who live in Denmark.
Here for study ;) http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=50.888174&lon=5.979499&z=5.2&r=0&src=msl

You must get wind almost every day. I take it they're facing the Baltic or North Sea?

31/10/13(Thu)20:23

some still operate, mostly at Kinderdijk (near Rotterdam) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppQVZqDzSD8

>>25833>>25834 Interesting. I had it translated into English but the information on the chart wasn't too much more than what you've told me. I didn't look at too many but most didn't have the sails on the wind arms. I'm guessing they're the ones that are inactive.

The closest windmill is 7km.

most are used as a museum, some still work though.

Apparently there are 1170 wind mills in the Netherlands, here's a list in Dutch (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lijst_van_windmolens_in_Nederland) however it also lists the American windpumps. And it seems there are still a few in Limburg.

>>25823 You just can't blow down some of that old construction. Are they still used as gristmills?

30/10/13(Wed)20:52

>>25823 cool snap..

I'm happy everyone's okay!

30/10/13(Wed)13:32

Yes, sadly 4 people lost their lives in the UK. If I recall about 15 lost their lives, and around 1.5 million trees, in '87.

Luckily you're too far away from the shore, JC. But according to the news at least 4 people in the UK died during the storm.

None of the old windmills were damaged.

29/10/13(Tue)22:46

The storm wasn't as bad as the one in '87 here in the UK but still pretty nasty for those in the south. I think the worst of the storm was over the English channel which is why England got away relatively lightly but Holland and Germany got hit hard.

>>25820 cool. I've been very close to where ever you, zeus, and JesusChrist live too. I also don't know the exact route cause I wasn't the one flying ;)

29/10/13(Tue)11:59

>>25819 Grim, I've been within a few miles of where you live. A few years ago three of us went to the MZ motorcycle near factory near Chemnitz and we passed through Belgium into Germany very close to you. I don't know the exact route we took because my mate was navigating, but we can't have been far away.

Most of the damage was in Amsterdam, The Hague (Den Haag) and the Islands.

The red dot (still in the Netherlands) gives you an idea where I live. Not anywhere near the sea, the fastest route to the open sea is about 240km/149mi

29/10/13(Tue)08:41

As for locking down the windmills? They have a speed regulator (computer), they start to rotate when the wind speed reaches 3 meters per second and stops when the wind speed exceeds 25 ms. Pretty clever.

I don't live anywhere near the shore and there aren't any windmills nearby for at least 25km.

Hurricanes/storms happen from time to time, mostly at the shore though. And a few years back we did have a tornado (a tiny one) at, yes you guess it, near the shore/sea sides.

Where I live it's most of the time pretty good living, not too cold not too hot. At least Sunday the wind speed stayed below 100kph.

28/10/13(Mon)22:15

I suppose those waves put the candle out in the lighthouse.
Did they lock down the prop rotors on the windmills or did your lights just get very bright for a while?
How often do you get hurricanes like this?
I've been thru 6 or 7 of these things in my lifetime and they're no fun at all. Did any tornadoes come out of this storm?
