The little birds had recently stopped coming to my birdfeeder and now, I guess I know why!

I looked this bird up and it turns out to be a "Sharp-shinned Hawk".

Good story. You're fortunate to see first hand drama.

"Breaking news: man lures young birds in garden only to set them up with a predator." You hear it here first. Weazel News ;)

The hawk left and I was free to move about and sure enough, saw this little bird holding perfectly still.

It was a few minutes in waiting, but finally, he took a chance and fly away, but the hawk shot out of nowhere and tailed him. They vanished behind a large tree and that was it. I suspect the little bird was devoured. I have no pictures of the chase, but it was exciting to see!

I didn't connect the two immediately. The hawk sat there for awhile, not worried about me or my cats staring at him through the window ten feet away. He kept eyeing the ground around the tomato plants. I was hoping he'd go after the caterpillars! ;)

This Friday morning, I had about 8 little birds enjoy some free grub and I was excited to see them all back. I turned away from the window for a moment and heard a WHOOSH sound. I looked back, and they had all scattered! This hawk had landed on the wall.
