Comet PANSTARRS
18/03/13(Mon)21:29

You can just make out the comet in the centre of the red circle with the tail heading off in the 11 o'clock direction.

A friend and I went out just after sunset to try and find the PANSTARRS comet. When zooming in I managed to find it on this shot. Tomorrow we plan to try again but now I know where to find it I'll use my zoom lens to try and get a better shot.

When you have the new camera take some snaps of it! (proof) ;)

>>23022 Update on the DSLR front. Just been using my DSLR in anger for the first time since it got damaged. It's worse than I thought. I knew the LCD was damaged and tried to fix it, with much luck, but it turns out the auto focus system is damaged too :/ The AF motor throws a minor fit each time I switch the camera on and if I leave it in AF mode the images come out slightly blurred :S The nice vertical grip I have for it is also only working occasionally.
With this new knowledge I feel happier about getting a new Nikon D7000 and some quality new lenses :) FYI, my previous lenses are 21 years old, and won't fit a nikon anyway.

>>23016 As we didn't know precisely where the comet was, not visible to the naked eye, we used standard zoom lenses at around 35mm. The plan was to have another go now we know where it is using my 300mm lens, but the weather is bad and it looks like we probably won't get another chance for this comet.
If that had worked well the idea was then to use our telescopes to try and get some detailed shots, but maybe that'll happen with the next comet.

I'm also thinking about getting a new DSLR (switching to Nikon from Sony) and lenses soon which would allow for less noisy long exposures which would be sweet :)

>>23016 All the time. They have smelly L.A. smog in them.

20/03/13(Wed)22:57

looks like fun! What's the zoom on your camera, JesusChrist?

>>23002 we've had some nasty clouds coming off the pacific all week so far. I wonder if you ever get our used clouds?

20/03/13(Wed)11:37

We HAD clear skies. That came to an end yesterday afternoon. A cold front blew in and rain today. I'm not ever going to see a comet.

19/03/13(Tue)19:49

Weather is no good today so I'll see what tomorrow brings :/

19/03/13(Tue)17:22

>>22985 To find it Look West shortly after sunset and it will be just above the horizon. Pretty much impossible to see with the naked eye, so you will need binoculars, a telescope or a camera that can do 5 second and longer exposures. It will only be visible for a few more days before it is gone.

>>22973 Shortly after sunset follow a line from the moon through Jupiter and down to just above the horizon and you'll be looking in the right direction.

* Note that the image above was a 10 second exposure!

We can look forward to comet Ison later in the year that will hopefully be much brighter and should be amazing!

19/03/13(Tue)13:39

Waldo? Thank god you circled it, it would make a great quiz ;)

Did you know where to look? Did NASA or the news give you a general direction? "look up"

19/03/13(Tue)10:14

This particular comet wasn't even mentioned on our news here; possibly it's not visible from our spot on the globe. We have, however, been able to see a great display of the crescent moon and Jupiter together in the evenings.

>>22971 Overcast skies are a major problem in the UK :/ We were very lucky to get these shots as it was pretty cloudy today... ...and it will be for the rest of the week, while this comet is still visible!?! :/

18/03/13(Mon)23:50

Pretty cool, my man. Luckily the sky wasn't overcast. It was overcast the night Haley's comet passed. It was the only chance I had.
