New record in 2012 for Giant Pumpkins. Ron Wallace of Rhode Island earned his place in the record books with the first pumpkin to break the one ton mark. 2009 pounds!

Great feature on pumpkins

From what I am told, the sonsitency and flavor is just not the same in the giant ones. Most I assume just get displayed and fawned over until the inevitable rot sets in and then, after seed harvest, they become compost.
