Oh dear

This is a pillar in the parking garage of the shopping mall in my town Heerlen. It has sunk 5 meters (as of yesterday) and more pillars are sinking too. Part of the mall will be demolished. Heerlen and most of south Limburg was a mining area (coal).

Was just thinking a coal mine can run for miles underground and if it sinks in one place a chain reaction could ensue.

>>13725 we all know the ground is divided into layers, right? Sand, clay, marl, coal in the case of Limburg. Apparently there was an air pocket in the marl area not the coal(marl being affected by water is serious business, check the shores of the UK). Above the marl is the clay and sand area, at some point the air bubble was stronger than the force of those two and bubbled it's way up, weakening the structure and ... well.

>>13727 The tall building is the residential flat, build in a different area on a different base it isn't affected and therefor don't need to be demolished. However some ppl are not so sure about that.

Is that tall building in the background going to be affected?

Did nobody think to look at the old mine map before building that mall? :/

The south of Limburg is mostly consisted out of marl, hence making it easy to mine for coal. Downsize is that it isn't very solid material and shifts easy when exposed to water.

>>13708 Sounds like certain areas of Mexico City - the whole city was built upon a lake that was filled. It looks like they'll probably use the rubble from the demolition to add more support and build again some day(?)
Though it makes me wonder what is causing the sinking. Isn't coal typically harder than that?

different angle, same pillar. They were renovating that part of the garage and workers saw cracks in the concrete..
