The Fishtank Lighter Upper 3000
27/02/11(Sun)15:20

This is my latest project. It's a new fishtank lid with all LED lighting. 2 rows of daylight white and 1 row of RGB. The lighting is controlled by my custom built electronics and micro-controller. I used an Arduino Mega as the MC and have programmed it through my PC. The lights can be manually controlled for any colour or left to operate automatically switching between off, day and night modes :)
It also operates a temperature gauge in the tank.
I plan to add more to the software over time to do other cool stuff.
The controller unit has a 16x2 character LCD and a 6 button keypad to control the menu options.

>>8550 Perhaps not! The tank is 100 Litres (22 Gallons) 3ft x 1ft x 1ft3" :)

>>8544 cool! now take a picture of you IN the tank in your underwear so we can gauge the size of the tank :)

>>8538 It is turned on!?! I guess you mean you want to see a cool colour... ...Purple baby, Yeah!
>>8541 I'd love to get to play with a load of army or navy kit, but as I don't go in for wars and fighting I don't suppose I'll get the chance. But i do like a good mix of electronic and mechanical :D

The background in syncro/servo systems in the Navy helped me with my first real job for NCR and cash registers. I enjoyed repairing them but had to quit when I found out other repairmen were crooks; couldn't handle that. My pasion was with carpentry. The experience, however, has helped me through the years with electrical problems in homes. Getting an idea from a programmed system (syncro) and making it perform a task thru mechanics (servo) is fascinating. Kind of like that tank that Grim built.

Could you make a picture of how it looks turned on?

>>8533 Electronics is just a hobby for me. I've wanted to play around with micro-controllers for a long time, especially as they play to my computer programming skills (good) more than my electronics skills (not so good). This project proved to be a good excuse to have a go. I have a few more ideas for MCU projects now. The next one will be a simple device to control my camera to take photos at regular intervals or when triggered by remote sensors.
RJ used to do electronics repairs for a living so he's the real expert amongst us!

You should be putting people on Mars, JC. I did electronics in the Navy but only fixed them so the radar would opperate in conjunction with the guns. We never had to improvise with the given We did have to build an opperable radio in shcool though. Don't think I could do it today. You do electronics for money?

>>8504 Funnily enough the fish couldn't give a crap :D
>>8508 I don't think fish would live long in Gin, and the idea of drinking 100 litres of 'Fish Gin' doesn't really appeal to me :D

Only when he spikes the water ;D

great job! so it's disco night at jesuschrist's aquarium!! do the fish like it?

>>8491 LOL, that isn't on my immediate list of things to do to the fish tank, but who knows in the future XD

Sweet! Those fish will feel so special! Are you going to install this in your tub too? ;)

Would be cool if you gonna put in a ship wreck with lights or maybe a big daddy from bioshock :D

Here we have the innards of the controller unit. bottom left is the Arduino Mega. Bottom right is my electronics to drive the light, temperature gauge, LCD and keypad. Top is the back of the LCD
