Building a R/C tank (Tamiya Leopard 2A6)

Yes, finally got the tracks on! That was a painfully slow task.

Long, lengthy, and tedious work for a job well done. You're ready to join those other guys and blow 'em to hell and gone.

15/02/11(Tue)01:23

You wouldn't believe the fire power all the rednecks around me have. If anyone ever tried to invade the States they'd come up against 300million guns of various sizes and shapes. I think I remember some Japanese Admiral attesting to that when it was thought Japan could invade us.

Thank you goodgrief.
The Swedish? Nein, ze Germans ;)

Do we need an army? Yes. But a Tank battalion? Not anymore..We got the CV9035 IFV, that vehicle can destroy tanks too.

14/02/11(Mon)03:38

Kuddo's for a fine job. Didn't know the Dutch had or needed an army. It's those Swedes isn't it. I have a good friend that's Swedish; maybe having a good army isn't such a bad idea.

14/02/11(Mon)00:06

thanx all!
It's the standard color scheme for the Dutch Army. I added some rust spots. Now I'm browsing how and if I should apply the camo netting. I don't want to screw-up the paintjob, nor the netting.

06/01/11(Thu)18:10

*I meant: my previous Hang Long and JC's tank ARE preset

06/01/11(Thu)18:00

I plugged the wires in the receiver (thingy with the antenna) wrong. When I turned them around I suddenly heard a massive diesel!!

>>7637 & >>7649 The DMD control unit must be 'set' first. I seem to forgotten that when I was overjoyed that my little tank finally worked.
This setup (transmitter & receiver) were added by the online shop (www.afv-model.de also in English), Tamiya's standard model did not contain those. So no they aren't preset. My previous 'kiddy' tank from Hang Long and I bet JC's crappy tank were too.
The back of the transmitter can be opened and it is possible to reverse the output. But all I need to do is follow the instruction manual and set the DMD control unit.

06/01/11(Thu)04:33

I'm seeing 'fixed' wire plug-ins that are obviously pre set at manufacturing. Is it also true the transmitter and receiver are pre set at the factory? If you can't change the control or reception I'm thinking one or the other must be replaced to make the function 'act' correctly. If you could open one up and change only two wires (swap them) this might do the trick.

05/01/11(Wed)21:15

>>7616 Sound like you either have some connections on the receiver wrong or it may be the transmitter has some buttons/switches that can change things around.

>>7620 It can, learn to hack :D

05/01/11(Wed)20:09

>>7620 that's why I have the PS3 Move ;)

05/01/11(Wed)19:09

too bad your ps3 controller can't just be the universal controller for everything! :)

05/01/11(Wed)18:44

-MAJOR UPDATE- Yeehaaww, I got it working!! Aah, the sweet sound of the Leopard woke the cats XD
All functions work; main gun, coax mg, turret rotation, driving, sound and most important: the flash light! :) Only weird part is the controller, up is left turn and left is forward :S

Soon..I'll post a crappy video but first the build can continue!!!!

24/10/10(Sun)12:27

lol, I know how they lure the people. Our local Ikea serves excellent breakfast all day long ;)

23/10/10(Sat)20:18

i went to ikea recently and was surprised at HOW you buy something there.. i didn't buy anything, but took notes so i will be prepared next time :)

23/10/10(Sat)20:10
thank you

Officially they are my sisters cats but her husband is allergic(he just doesn't like them)
And thank god they are almost dead..uhm I mean 14 y/o. Cheetah is the obese female weighing 12.5kg and the male is Gizmo (barf-o-matic).

Let's see..the manual has got 40 pages minus 10 or 11 about information of the real thing. If you ever bought something from Ikea you know how the manual looks. If not go buy something shitty there ;)

23/10/10(Sat)18:30

great to have a hobby like this!! how many pages is the operating manual? :)

i didn't know you had cats. what are they called? did you give your tank a name?

23/10/10(Sat)15:37

A long time ago, I had seen an R/C magazine with large scale R/C tanks! One tank had an actual 12 gauge shotgun for a barrel! It fired deer slugs by remote control! Freaky!!

!update!
Bought a 7.2Volt 5100 mHa battery with charger. It should be fully charged in about 5 hours.
Then I can set the transmitter, receiver, dmd unit and servo.
Currently gluing the basket, will paint that later.
Still gotta do the top turret, adding small stuff like the hatches, the smokedischargers (16!), handles, etc. Painting the turret and much much later adding the camouflage.

23/10/10(Sat)13:53

>>6663 Goodgrief, I'm afaid you're going to have to take a time out for that typo! ;D

23/10/10(Sat)13:37

Excuse the typo on the word 'easily'. You're doing a fine job here, Mr. Grim. If possible, I'd like to see, as others probably would also, a video of this tank in action after completion. You might want to include yourself at the controls in the video. This is just a request, understand. It's not everyday one has the opportunity to talk to others around the world.

23/10/10(Sat)13:24

Taking into consideration all the costs of advertising, die-casting, pre-assembly, salaries, building maintenance and overhead, profit, and most important, limited sales, the overall price is easisy understood.

Only that much?

I didn't buy the (optional) battle system. It adds a stupid looking turret thingy where the commander supposed to be.
Besides, I just want to have fun with it on my own. Battling I do online ;)

It does cost a lot but it also depends on the manufacturer. The Heng Long M1A2 Abrams was only 70 euro and had a real bb-gun (ok, it was crap and smell like it too) but a handy knife carver can make it work. ;)

Please remind that this model has 2 electric engines, multiple real aluminum parts, receiver, transmitter and a cpu and that always makes it expensive.

I still live in the south of the Netherlands, goodgrief. Lot's of good 'rough' 1 to 16 track worthy terrain and if that won't do it the exiting urban terrain of gardens will do ;)

21/10/10(Thu)13:38

Looked at the videos on You tube of these little puppies in action; the real thing AND the R/C jobs. Both were quite impressive. The R/C guys have constructed whole battlefields (roads, bridges, farm houses, etc) to roll around on. Interesting to see the number of people that build these things. Wow, they are expensive. Where do you live, Grim? Hope there's others for you to roll into battle with.

21/10/10(Thu)12:34

Holy cow, that's worth more than my car!

20/10/10(Wed)19:09

>>6604 I love working on stuff like that! :D

20/10/10(Wed)12:42
Finally got the metal primer :D

yes, engine start-up, idle, full ref, turret rotation, main gun blast/fire and machinegun (coax) firing sound.

As for the costs, please sit down....€750 euro plus shipping costs and remote controller and tools. :O

It's possible to drive it in the mud (youtube) but I modified my kit (drilled some unnecessary holes) so that won't be a good idea ;)

According to the manual it will run for 1 hour when fully charged. The 7.2 V is rechargeable and the adapter should recharge it within 2-3 hours.

I have 2 cats ;)

20/10/10(Wed)10:57

Will it make a 'noise' when the gun goes off? How much did the kit cost? Can you run it through the dirt or would that gum up the tracks? Wonder how long it'll run on one charge? Maybe you should have ordered two battery packs. Do you have a friend that you can do battle with or at least crush his cat?

20/10/10(Wed)07:20
35.7
(35.7 Kb, 640x480)

!update! a 'long' one this time

pre-assembled the gun system. Still no metal prime and 7.2 V battery pack (ordered) prevents actual progress. The gun houses the coaxial mg with a led, the main barrel with a long optical fiber in it (orange tip barely visible) and the recoil system (this recoils the main gun only) and was quite greasy to build ;)
I also pre-assembled the turret rotation motor (another greasy job), painted the 'cables' in 99/91 color code instead of 56 (I don't 'ave it)
Next to do is study first then finish the top turret and some small stuff.

DIE HENG LONG, DIE

>>6592 Let us know how it goes. A friend had one of those, he practiced it indoor and one day he was homeless ;)

I think my previous tank was a Heng Long (M1A2 Abrams) with the bb-gun function. But it shot every 5 minutes 1 and it didn't drive very well. Not to mention it smelled awful, like REALLY cheap plastic filled with lead ;)

I bought one of these little fellers a couple of weeks ago. Three hours charging for 3-5 minutes of flying. It'll be a while before I get the hang of it.

18/10/10(Mon)20:41

>>6579 It's a Heng Long (cheap, and not entirely accurate). It's also a version 1 which has the shooting and moving turret but no recoil or smoke that I think the version 2 has.
My tank is more of a toy rather than a model really, but I still have fun with it. Some people have upgraded them though to be totally accurate and have more effects. I'm not sure if I'll do much with mine.

18/10/10(Mon)19:52
Nice tanky, Gruber

that's a looker! I thought of buying a Sherman first (cheaper) but it was such a crappy tank ;)

Does it have the recoil+sound and flash light?

18/10/10(Mon)11:47
thx goodgrief

I bought rechargeable batteries (7.2 V / 4500 mAh) and they go in the turret, for easy access and stuff. Also the main control unit is there.

I can't seem to remember much of our time on Snaps/Lumra... :/
So SeaFox, got a pic of your plane?

18/10/10(Mon)11:04

Amazing little drive assembly you have there. Quick-change battery packs or plug-in to recharge? Where are they stored? Turret?
I remember Seafox saying on Snaps that he needed to pull the plane from the basement and fly it about a year ago. Mine's still in the attic.

Hull is as good as ready, still needs to be painted. Not sure if I should spray it or going old skool. Also need to buy metal primer, to paint the drive sprocket and the radiators.

Note to all: optical fiber is really delicate :( No working front and tail lights, until I have spare parts

18/10/10(Mon)00:26

When I was much younger, I launched rockets! I was THEE rocket expert of the neighborhood! But I never had trains! Later on, I raced R/C cars, and I still have my plane in the basement! One of these days I may fly it again! :p
