Saw this info on PBS a while back. Tried to find it in books but couldn't. It was a tough question. During the Civil War a man saw the need to save these beautiful old trees and rode, on horseback, all the way to Washington. Grant gave him a few minutes away from the war and had someone introduce a bill before congress. He then signed it into law. Some were cut in the 20's and 30's so congress made it a National Park. Don't know what pres was in office at that time. Yes, there are some thoughtful people with vision still alive but hard to find.
Those guys aren't in the best lounging area. Another trivia question...who signed a bill protecting the giant redwoods of California from being cut down?
