Thank you all! My first good guess was going to be "Rear Window" but you had already siad it! And "The Man Who Knew Too Much" was going to be my next guess as well, if vertigo was wrong! ;)

I was figuring it might be an Alfred Hitchcock film and you mentioned the word 'classic'. However, my next guess would have been "The Man Who Knew Too Much".
