I've always wondered how Israeli "Mizrahit" music sounds to an outsider. Remember, this is what is currently ,and for the past 4 years, being considered the most popular music in Israel.

You're probably tired of hearing only Israeli songs. Here's something from Scotland

Probably my favorite Julie Fowlis song,
Ged A Sheol Mi Air M' Aineol

A protest song

Hadag Nahash - Shir Nehama

The name of the song means "comfort song". Most of this band's songs play on the fact that most people ridiculed by them don't have any idea that they are being ridiculed, thus, this band is made popular mainly by the people it ridicules.

The chorus goes something like:
"Sovevuni bashkalim
haletuni bakzavim
ve-ani kese tamim
odeni ma'amin"

Translation:
"Spin me with the money
Amaze me with the lies
And I'm like a gullible lamb
I still believe"

Sorry for the long text, just thought some of you would be interested.

Reggae is what was added to this version of the song.
Tomer Yosef, the guy who re-performed this, does a lot of intertwining music types.
The most familiar music he does is Balkan Beat Box

seems very reggae in avarti rak.. of course, i know nothing of israeli music. it that a normal style?

i am a huge fan of cat stevens as well

28/06/10(Mon)00:01

funny, i was sitting here strumming my guitar to some music and then i played this first song (pretty simple chord structure and good sound), but the chorus is the same as "rewind" from paolo nutini.. C - G - Am - F

that makes things easier! :D

i like it

Most of ours over here is crap these days!

27/06/10(Sun)19:22

It's the same over here. Except, maybe, for American and British songs. They're very successful here.

27/06/10(Sun)17:00

That first one sounds just like the songs I hear on the radio every day. The third one could easily be a classic western rock band too. It's funny, foreign language pop music is hardly ever successful in the UK, even though pop music lyrics are usually practically meaningless. And often unintelligible.

27/06/10(Sun)13:11

Next song:
Kaveret - Yo Ya

The band's name, Kaveret, means "Beehive". It's an iconic band considered to be the parent of every other Israeli rock band since. This song makes a play on Hebrew proverbs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wER3uM3X3bA

27/06/10(Sun)12:47

The previous song is called "Kama Ahava" (How much love) by the singer Kobi Peretz.

This is another song, not considered "Mizrahit". Called "Avarti Rak Kedey Lireot" (I passed only to look) It's a remake of a 1970's song by the same name.

Can you even see a difference? I do, but that maybe because I'm Israeli.
