Here's a tiny test I made. I currently listen everything through my headphone cause it's really clear and I don't hear those annoying trucks/cars driving past my place.

While at home, in the absence of others, nothing beats a strong amplifier and a competent set of speakers, aching to be turned up to the crest of that line between loud and neighbors are complaining loud. A personally favorite of mine, when the wife is away, is to wake the kids with a good vocal or strong percussion intro, only 30 or so seconds, played well above the neighbor complaint level, but short enough not to induce their wrath.
But at work, I when I really want to get motivated and tune out the office, I prefer the Studio style headphones. The clarity and response that is delivered through a nice quality over the ear style headphone allows blockage of all extraneous noise and fills the wandering voids of thought with a rhythmic cadence that drives productivity.
