One just wasn't enough. This one will hold some sort of flag which I haven't figured out yet. It will go on the lower roof ridge over the shop area.

OSHA was reigned in years ago because they were fining too many big businesses...and now this.
>>23618..Damn!
>>23625..Damn!
It's now a shame they'll have to live without all those extra property taxes.

The Enschede fireworks disaster, called Vuurwerkramp (fireworks disaster), was caused by a fire which broke out in the SE Fireworks on May 13, 2000 in the eastern Dutch city of Enschede. The fire led to an enormous explosion that left 23 people dead (including four firemen) and 947 injured. The biggest blast was heard as far as 60 kilometres from the scene. About 2000 homes were damaged or destroyed, leaving 1250 people homeless. The extent of the damage was estimated at half a billion euros.

the area looks better after the explosion. It's appalling that anyone would think a school and old folks home should be located just blocks away from this ticking time bomb.

>>23611 in the same way I look at where (chemical) factories are located here. Only a few hundred meters away from houses. Last Friday a local factory went up in smokes and within a radius of 1 km every window had to be shut. That can't be good.
Look up Chemelot, near Sittard-Geleen, Limburg, The Netherlands.

I heard OSHA is so under staffed it takes them every 175 years to visit a company..

19/04/13(Fri)15:44

>>23611 I thought the place looked like a shit hole when I took a look on goggle maps, what you're saying explains everything. :/

19/04/13(Fri)15:14

>>23603...and it even goes deeper than just OSHA, Grim. The township's council should have demanded OSHA shut them down and scrape the property. You'll never see one member of that council go to jail and that's where all of them deserve to be. Funds have been cut from OSHA because it's more important to spend 14 billion dollars capturing an asteroid.
I was reading today the Fertilizer Administration had taken locations of nationwide production companies off the web map. Bet they have! Not good the common public knowing what's in their back yard.

19/04/13(Fri)12:41

Thanks for the concern fellas but I'm in Houston. Sky20 is in Dallas but also a long way from the explosion.
Fertilizer (ammonium nitrate) is a bomb in a bag. Timothy McVeigh used the stuff in the Oklahoma City attack
In 1947 a ship berthed in Texas City and holding bags of fertilizer did the same thing. Killed the entire fire department except one man. You should read on Wikipedia about that. Blast was felt in Louisiana.
When fertilizer is on fire, back far away and let it do its thing. Luckily the children wern't in shcool (300 yds away). Look at that apartment building. Idiots all over the place. Fertilizer plants need to be in an open field with nothing around for miles.

in West, Texas. Which is south of Dallas and north of Waco..but not west

18/04/13(Thu)18:23

"A massive explosion ripped through a fertilizer plant near Waco, Texas, injuring more than 100 and leaving many feared dead.

Authorities were bracing to find more victims in collapsed buildings, which rescuers could not approach because of the raging flames and dangerous chemicals.

The blast happened about 8 p.m. in West, a town of 2,800 about 20 miles north of Waco. It was unclear what had triggered it."

Texas is a big place, and I don't exactly know where goodgrief is situated, but I hope everything's okay!

15/04/13(Mon)22:40

My shop building is 15 X 16 but after tools, work bench, storage racks, shelving and a cabinet it's reduced to 11 X 14. I'd like a shop so large one would have to drive a golf cart from one tool to the next. I'd still trip though.
I'm working on a bird house right now and a flag would fit the bill. Hopefully, it wouldn't scare the birds away.
>>23526 I very seldom weld so it's been a year since I cranked up the MIG. I'm a man with a paper asshole and just have to have things I don't need; my bank account reflects my wanton spending.

Loving the fact that you put up Cupolas by the way. It's a classic touch that can really enhance a building. We need to see about getting you a Merlin's Bar flag to fly.

15/04/13(Mon)15:22

I am still running flux core with this welder but have not had any problems with it. As I said before, I would like to replace it with a true shielded gas unit, but with the space constraints that I have (13' x 15' shop area) I have to be cautious with what I put in there. It is truly getting too small in my shop for anymore things in there without tripping over something. Time to get some projects done rearrange the mess.

14/04/13(Sun)23:09

How big is the working area of your shop?

14/04/13(Sun)23:00

>>23506 My arc welder was a Lincoln and it served me well for years. How about your Lincoln MIG? Ever had any problems with it? Of course the flux core wire doesn't count. That crap goes bad as soon as you remove the wrapper.

Installed! One heavy son-of-a-gun (75 lbs.) I'm thinking about a bird house for the west end of the carport and that's all the roof should have.

12/04/13(Fri)22:08

>>23480 That "Premium" glue made by Locktight might be the glue you're looking for. I've glued steel to concrete, wood to hardi-siding, glass to wood, etc... There's a picture of it in my other cupola thread. It's $4.50 a tube and might work.

I have this MIG welder and small tanks of gas for brazing. I sold my arc welder; too big and didn't like it and was also far more than I needed.

...and a plasma cutter.

12/04/13(Fri)19:49

>>23479 Can't wait for the postman to bring me that MIG ;D
I often want to work with materials that are to fine for my ARC so I often braze or solder with a butane/propane mix in those situations. I'd like to work more with sheet materials and I thing a MIG would be great for that, my ARC is just too aggressive even turned all the way down. I used Oxy/Acetylene back at school and quite liked it.

>>23478 Adhesives can be great with aluminium, but it's hard to get the right type of adhesives for a sensible price. Lotus cars pioneered using adhesives with aluminium and achieved far better strength and flexibility than was possible by even the best welders.

12/04/13(Fri)14:41

>>23475 Arc is fine if all your parts are fixed in place. Same can be said for TIG or Oxy/Acetylene. MIG is the handymans way to go as it functions relatively as easy as a hot glue gun. Just pull the trigger. No striking an arc, no extra filler rod to control, squeeze and go.

BTW...I have an Oxy/Acetylene torch set, Arc welder, and MIG welder. The one think I would do different for my MIG is opt for the shielded gas over flux core wire as there is less pitting with the Argon shielding. If I find an irresitable deal on a MIG, I'll replace my Flux-Core MIG and send it to you JC.

12/04/13(Fri)14:08

I'm more in favor of adhesives. But it's a risky business

12/04/13(Fri)12:25

>>23472 I'll bet Mr Fancy-Workshop here already has an Arc welder, and probably a Mig or Tig too! :D

Great work yet again :)

11/04/13(Thu)14:09

Everything you see was made from leftover materials I had laying around except for a tube of glue. The roof was 1/4 inch cedar closet paneling. I used 3 coats of spar varnish for weathering. Red trim was from a piece of fir. The flagstaff is 1/2 inch galvanized electrical conduit (not pictured) and topped with a conical-shaped spire made from 1 1/4 inch dowel. This thing weighs about 70 pounds and I'm still figuring out how to get it up on the roof.
A clock sounds like a good idea but if I keep this cupola construction going I'm going to have to beef up the foundation and walls to hold the wieght.

11/04/13(Thu)09:22

I wish I had a garage :(
