I've never seen a sinkhole here. Probably because the soil is too hard (dense). I'll bet further north where the soil is mostly sand it happens a bit more.

Did they found out if it was due to rainwater or a leaking sewer pipe, or just a natural phenomenon?

When I was a kid I don't ever remember these things. They've now become commonplace with whole houses sinking away. Maybe we should stop washing our hair and drinking water.
